This election is very winnable for John McCain.  The reason for this is simple.  Trends are cannibalistic.  Barack Obama is the hot trend right now but this can only be true as long as his followers are unaware of it.  There is nothing worse than being part of a trend that is exposed as just that… a trend.

I have actually already started to see that Obama supporters have already begun drifting back to normalcy.  Where are all the new fancy music videos?  Where are all the new Photoshopped indie campaign posters?  The fad is fading.  Obama has begun hedging his bet, too.  By saying that Republicans will resort to veiled racial attacks (you mean like the Democrat, Hillary?), Obama has begun saying that when he ultimately loses, that’s why.  It could never be that people actually reject his ideas (does he actually have any ideas?).

At any rate, I keep thinking about Livestrong bracelets.  Those yellow bracelets raised millions of dollars.  But how many bracelets do you see anymore?  The press killed a great idea by simply reporting on it.  Everyone wants to be ahead of the trend.  Once CNN reports on how all the cool kids are wearing yellow bracelets, it ceases to be cool.  The people that bought them may have thought they had good intentions but really they just wanted to show off their $2 bracelet.  Anyone can give a couple thousand dollars to a charity, but unless they give you a fashion accessory, is it really worth it?  That’s what it’s like to be an Obama supporter.  It’s about image.  It’s about the accessories.  “That ‘O’ pin will go really well with my Hollister hoodie.”

There are four and a half months until the election and there will be non-stop coverage of how the Obama movement is….well….moving.  In that time, the base of his movement, young voters, who are most aware of trends and the sociological impact of being associated with one, will quickly realize that when the NY Times is reporting that all the cool kids are wearing Obama buttons, it might be time to move on to something else.  This is why young voters are not a dependable voting bloc.  What’s cool today, is never still cool a couple months from now.

I will say this about young people.  They can spot a phony.  When the wizard is forced from behind the curtain, it will be clear to them what an empty suit Obama really is.
